Its just mad. These people have lost the place entirely. The pet/owner bond is so strong that they will in fact sacrifice themselves if it means a stupid cat or dog is saved. Don't do that for escaping budgies do they? Its simply because pet-owners cant fly. Thats why they don't let them out. Cat owners don't realise that they are only surrogate owners and their cats don't actually like them much until the food is dished out. Fact.

I wouldn't quite go so far as you on this. Pets play an important role in many families, providing companionship, humor, and a legitimate, if unusual relationship between pet and owner. A psychologist would not attempt to minimize such a relationship, so I don't think any ol' yokel like yourself should, either. You play the value of this relationship down, but it seems obvious that you do not totally understand it.
That said, the value of a pet does NOT equal the value of a person. In that sense, I am in agreement with you. It is not a good idea to risk your life for a pet. You don't do the pet, yourself, or your friends and family any good when you are dead. Simple common sense should come into play on this issue.

Because a dog or a cat is not "just a pet" it's part of your family and you care about it, worry about it and love it. A dog would defend it's owner at the hands of an attacker why wouldn't the owner do the same?
I love mydog to pieces and I would not hesitate going into a river to save him or to protect him from harm - he's family!

You seem to have some very strong feelings about this subject. It really is a waste of energy. Why would someone else wanting to save their own pet create such a reaction in you? It is the road to ignorance to be dismissive of everything you do not understand. The answer you seek however is in your question - love.

I think you are just jealuse of people who know the feeling of love from the pet. Mabey you're jelaouse becasue you are feeling empty inside....

just because we would do anything to protect our animals does not class us as MENTALLY DISTURBED PET LOVERS!! thats really quite harsh!
i love my cats and yes i would do anything for them if they were in danger but obviously i would not put my own life in danger! they have been in my family since kittens so they are part of my family and always will be!!!
you don't sound like an animal lover so unless you had animals you wouldn't understand!!!!

Because cat and dog owners are people that really love their pets and would do anything for them including risking their own lives. I for one certainly would risk my own life to save my pets.

Just the same as when a human would risk their life for their own child - an animal should be treated equally to a child.
