Depending on the situation at home (parent(s) working, home alone, etc) I would say no younger than 14 - more like 16 or older. And make them financially responsible for paying the bill. If it isn't paid, it gets turned off. Then they owe the $200 early termination fee too. Responsibility is the key with cell phones - with overages and extra texts being so expensive, it could really pose a financial burden.
And in my opinion, eight year olds with cell phones is just stupid. What 8 year old needs a cell phone? jeez

I used to think that way. But in another question about this on Y/A I saw an answer that made me more aware.
They had gotten their 10 year old an emergency only cell.
It has 911 plus up to four other numbers that are all that can be called from it. I thought that was great.

as quickly as toddlers are sufficiently old to flow out unsupervised, say sixteen, is whilst they choose a telephone. in addition they could desire to be able to pay for it. youthful than that would not make experience to me. additionally, as quickly as a discern feels the advantages could outweigh the expenses. that's an excellent thank you to objective a toddler's accountability point. For secure practices motives, the cellular telephone may be a real plus -- yet for much less in charge toddlers it can be a disaster. mothers and fathers ought to pull them in circumstances of abuse. i'm 50 with a 27 3 hundred and sixty 5 days old daughter and a 15 month old grand daughter.

when they can pay the bill. Kids that young don't need to be that independent.
They should always be supervised and any parent that uses a cell phone as a leash for their kids deserves to have their kids abducted because they weren't responsible enough to have them in the first place.

When they understand the value of money.........so probably around 45!
Seriously, I cannot see why a child under secondary education age, ie 11, needs a phone. Even then I'd prefer to wait til they were around 13/14 and ensure that it was strictly limited in its use.

I can understand for emergency purposes only and they have phones just for that reason. But a cell for talking with his friends or whatever thats stupid, I would say about 16 or when they get a job and get one themselves.
