How do you install the starter on a 1985 Yamaha Virago ?

I'm having trouble lining -up the starter with the c-clip attached, I finally gave-up and installed it without the c-clip, what will happen if I leave it out. I'm doing other repairs on the bike and I have'nt try to start it yet. Is there something I should know about this before I do ?

Yes my bad, XV700 and of course I have a Clymer's manual but its pretty vauge. There is not an acess panel for the gears on the other side.

It's a fairly simple job. Do Not try to start the bike with the
c-clip missing. The starter clutch gears will get ground up.
Remove the left crankcase cover and spin the gears by hand while tapping in the starter motor.
Put a film of oil or grease around the starter motor o-ring.
That will help it slide in and make a good seal.
Do not do any more work without a shop manual. If you already have one....great.

You didn't say what size your Virago was. The best advice I can give you is to get yourself a repair manual. Without it you are working blind. With the money you are saving by doing the work yourself the book will pay for itself in no time. You have several options:

Yamaha also has free parts drawings on their website which might help. Again the manual is your best bet for getting it right and saving time.

You do not want to run the machine with the clip removed.

Virago's are infamous for there starters going out. the 1st one is tricky something of the ten or so which you will struggle by using would be undemanding. you would be a grasp! you will write a e book and be prosperous!! Don' t forget approximately the oil gentle! you would be expert at that too :) stable success!
