Not looking for the right or wrong - just different scales and how they compare.

Is it different in different countries? I'm in the UK and as a child recall being told that 135 was 'genius' level. More recently I have been told that 150 was the mark.

Thank you in advance!

Most people define it as the top two percent -- which is about two standard deviations above average. The standard deviation of most exams is between 15 and 25 points. For those with a smaller standard deviation, the "genius level" is about 130 -- for others it is 140-150.

You can look at Mensa's web page to see how they define it in terms of their membership requirements.

What is a genius?

It has been said that a 140 IQ is a "genius" score, however there is no definition, as such, in either of my psychological dictionaries about "genius." Neither is there an IQ score ranked as "genius." That 140 IQ is actually a misunderstanding. To continue Terman's story, he tested these hundreds of children, picked those with IQs above 140 (on the scale then in use) and proceeded to do a longitudinal study. From this beginning and subsequent publication of the books reporting on the study, the magic figure of IQ 140 came into play and current usage. The IQs of some well-known individuals have been called "genius," such as a book that claimed IQs of 180 and 200 for Alexander Pope and Charles Darwin. However, this is hardly likely, as they died long before the first intelligence test was produced.

Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400). Here's a rough guide:

115-124 - Above average (e.g., university students)
125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students)
135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals)
145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors)
155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners)
165-179 - High genius
180-200 - Highest genius
>200 - "Unmeasurable genius"

Well....... Average is 90-115, Above average or Superior would be 116-129, Gifted people have an IQ of 130-144. Genius 145 above is already a genius level. Above 160 your above an average genius. 200+? Okay ask yourself if you know the answer to the test.

Above 140, but people share different opinions, so people who got like 50 could be considered geniuses in perhaps non mathematical or scientific ways. Everyone is good at some things

The normal range is 85-115, so anything above that can be called "genius". It's a case of semantics, however, so it could mean anything from "above 110" to "above 150". The reason there are numbers is to do away with subjective labels.

I was sure that it was 140. Both my parents are 132.....my dad was always telling my mom how smart he was until they took an IQ test and both got exactly the same answer. That really ticked him off. Now they're divorced.
