infrared devices are cheaper, accurate, and used in most of the surveying devices ( total stations ), they can also be installed on levels and theodolites.

Ultrasonic. Since the sound is much slower than the light, and assuming it's using a reflected pulse to measure, the sound will give you better accuracy.

Car Parking sensors use ultra-sonics, but I think a laser measurer would be more accurate.
