I'm 16 weeks pregnant, and I am hoping that someone out there is going to tell me I'm not going mad! Since Saturday, the top of my left thigh keeps going numb and cold, and I can't feel anything if I touch it. It just seems to be in a really localised area, and it only seems to happen when I've been sitting down. It generally comes and goes, though, maybe about 6 - 7 times a day.

I'm trying to make an appointment with my GP to check it out, but anyone in the UK will know how easy that is, so I was hoping that in the mean time someone may be able to shed some light as to what it is? I'm thinking trapped nerve or something similar, but I'm open to suggestions!

First of all you shouldn't get nervous - it's not good for both of you. Feeling numb here or there is normal during pregnancy. Some of it might be caused by nerves entrapment in your lower back area (bones change position to make possible for baby to come out when ready), and some of it could be due to water retention in your body what puts pressure on the nerves. Baby is still too small to put any pressure yet.

It does just sound like the baby is lying on the nerve that goes to that area. Try not to sit too long at a time. Walk around when it happens. If you are really concerned or if it gets worse you could try going to the emergency room. Best of luck!

Trapped nerve was my first thought! Your little one may be laying on a nerve and depending on when your baby moves or changes postion is when the numbness comes and goes.

Its probably one of two things either a) your pants or underwear are too tight which it limiting the blood supply...since it mainly happens when you sit this is a very good possibility. Or b) you have a pinched nerve in your back. The first is easily fixed the 2nd you just kinda have to wait out.

Your losing some circulation in your leg when your sitting. That's normal. You can try pressing on your tummy trying to get the baby to shift a bit. Or don't in the same position for too long. Get up and move around frequently if you have to sit for a long period of time.
