Tinos
a 15 minute boat ride from Mykonos. I have stayed there 4 times while on trips to Greece. Not as touristy as Mykonos and Santorini. It is a tourist destination but mostly for Greeks---some of them on religious pilgramages---some not. Much more authentically Greek than almost any island---here's why. Although it has all the shops, sights to see etc as other islands The Greek govt. doesn't promote the island because it is like the "Lourdes"of Greece. It is the most holy place in Greece because of the church of Panaevigilista (spelled wrong). It is at the site where centuries ago a nun dreamed about a miraculous religious icon----long story (very interesting) at any rate a priest insisted on continued digging and it was uncovered. The church was built on that site and people come there for miracles. You see crutches, wheelchairs etcall over the courtyard of the church. Most interesting, for about two city blocks fromthe port upwards to the bluff where the church is---the are rubber pads up the sides of the street. When asking for a miracle many Greeks crawl up the street on these pads all the way to the church in supplication to the virgin. It is weird when you first see it but it is every day life on Tinos. The streets leading up to the church are filled with religious items for sale in shops and booths. It is a fabulous island, must visits are VOLAX one of only two sites in the world that have these large unexplained boulders some as large as a small house. Also fabulous----take the bus to the far side of the Island Panormos (where I usually stay). For a couple of dollars it is the most spectacular bus ride you will ever take. They could market the ride for ten times that amount. Panormos is a small fishing village with about 10 or so restaurants, Looking at the harbor if you set off to the left there is a fabulous secluded beach about a mile away. You first cross a small beach at the edge of town then follow a path up a hill and around down across another beach and then up some stone steps to another path which takes you to the beach. It is called Kavalurko or something like that and I think it means starfish. You won't believe your eyes. If you are brave you can fight your path across some narrow straits to where a lighthouse sits on the top of a rocky uninhabited island---I didn't do it my ex husband did. Anyways the beach is fabulous and if one didn't want to wear a suit (no one around in September which is when I go) first theres no one there----second you can see one coming on the trail from at least a mile away. Look up Sharon Turner on the main drag. She is fromPhilly but has lived onTinos for years. She is a travel agent for an agency from Mykonos which has a small branch on the island (Windmills travel). She is the central stop in for americans spot and a wealth of information. That's just a taste of Tinos. Love Santorini as well but very touristy..

Can not answer you that. As I write this I'm on my sailing boat roaming around the Aegean. There's 6000 islands to chose from and each one has its own particular flavor and beauty. I have many favorites to go with various moods and situations. Shinousa, Nea Heraklia, Anafi, Astypalaia, Kythera, and yes Mykonos Paros, Tinos, Naxos, Santorini, Folegandros, Milos, too many to chose from. And how about Samothraki, Chios, Alonissos???? So I just island hop for the past 30 years and have still not seen all of them.

Oh costly, of costly. some human beings do have a wierd view of history. Magna Carta grow to be unquestionably no longer something to do with the British Empire which did no longer come into existence for yet another 500 unusual years, nor did it have something to do with the defeat of the Spanish Armada, which grow to be a triumph for England on my own. the terrific 2nd for the Empire grow to be over different years whilst colonisation ended. in spite of if there have been some battles for independence - India is the top occasion - there were no previous Empire interior the history of the international which had given up its colonies voluntarily by fact the British Empire did.

I don't know much about the Greek islands but I would like to be in Crete. I read somewhere that their cuisine is different and based on all those healthy and tasteful Mediterranean herbs and vegetables. This is so similiar to our cuisine (Turkish Cypriot). I would like to visit Crete some day and eat not in restaurants but in the homes of local people.
