It was a test of the super countrties following World War II. The US had the atomic bomb and Russis wanted to rule Europe following its attacks in the early part of World War II.
Then the space race was part of it. The Cuban missle crisis and rise of Fidel Castro.
So many elements. Watch the Historty Channel and the National Georgraphic Channel for this information. Get a good college history book. 101 level and it will give you losts of insight.

After WWII the allies divided up German Technology and each thought they had an edge or were worried the other did in military strength.
As a result they wanted to do better than the other the leading two countries were Russia and the USA. Both having opposing governmental theories.

briefly, the cold war was about the conflict between the ideologies of u.s. and ussr... u.s. being democratic and ussr being communist... the war was not like world war 1 or 2 but it is more of a silent battle... trying to outdo each other through the means of technology especially which country had the better nuclear weapons... hehehe

To sum it all up, the communists want to take over the world (and damn near did) and we wouldn't let them. We both had nukes and knew if one was launched (by either side) it meant the end of society, possibly mankind itself, because the opposing side would retaliate by launching their own. So we just sat around for nearly 50 years glaring at each other until the Communist government fell apart.
