For Dandelions and tap rooted weeds, use an apple corer. Garden centres often sell a multi-purpose version of basically the same thing.

Sounds extreme, but a pole with a mounted blow torch is effective it kills the weed AND the root although you may want to use a troul or some device to remove it after woulds

a weed spade. it's a metal shaft with a forked blade at the end.. they are good for digging out dandelions and other taproot weeds.

you can get them with long or short handles at most garden centers
