2000 st pickup 4x4 4.3 vetech engine. 94.000 miles.ok the manual says use 5w-30 front what ive heard on here is the first # the lower the more protection at cold starts.does this mean when the engines cold in the morning our when it cold out.because it not cold in missouri anymore.. the second # means the higher protection also.i dont care about performance i just want the engine to last as long as possible so why not use 5w-40 our 50?? if they even make that.

Use most any multi-weight. Longevity comes from changing oil and filter every three thousand miles.

You are right on the mark there.
5w-30 is good for colder climates ranging from @ -10 degrees, but if you don't experience cold weather below, say, +5 degrees then a quality 10w-40 or 20w-50 should see your car run well.

ALWAYS stick to the recommendations. The low number is the cold start protection. The high number is the value once the engine is warmed up. Your engine is designed to use a specific range of oil and you can shorten the life considerably by using a higher weight oil.

If you're going to change, consider the high mileage oil & filters.
