Simply put, the Yankees outbid them for Damon's services - they offered 4 years/$40 million; the Yankees did 4 years/$52 million. An extra $3 mil per? That would certainly influence my choice.

There are so many private insider-information that the public doesn't know about. But I am sure that the Sox made a decent offer based on his preceived market worth. The Yankees (as usual) offered alot more money and he was enticed to change scenery. Looking back, the yankees still haven't won the world series since 2000 & several of their free agent signings have been busts (Pavano - 4 years for 40 mil).

It was a money issue, Damon was looking for more money then the Red Sox were willing to pay him and the Yankees offered him the money so he jumped ship.

Because the Red Sox didn't want to pay him what he wanted and the Yankees did.

Key word in your comment... He WAS the best.
Damon's still good and will be ok this year, but he's getting old and his skills are diminishing. For the money the Yankees offered him, it wasn't worth it for the Sox to hold on to him.
