instead of media player and could you tell me why there is red crosses next to my songs in real player thank you

You want to go to the tool and preferences menu in real player and it will sort it out for you. I'd recommend a "delete absent files" option, just to get rid of your red crosses. Then you want to scan the music folder again (remember to keep it just on your music folder otherwise you'll get all the unwanted guff that comes with windows.

If I was you I would remove "Real Player, because the software has an embedded trojan hidden in their files. I have state of the art technology antivirus program that found the trojan during download and killed the entire file before installation. Plus even traced back to whom the trojan came from. (United States Army Intelligence, London, England).
I turned off my antivirus and download the file, and removed the file with the trojan embedded. Real Player, blocked the installation of their program. Was told to, "put the removed file back in for installation".
You should stay with Media Player, there are no embedded tracking devices or spyware, adware and trojans in Media Player.
If you don't believe me then pay $29.99 a one time fee for life and you will get all updates and all new versions of the anitvirus program I use that finds everything, including all compressed files and music files.

to change default settings open the file types window (control panel; folder options) and select the file type MP3. MPG MPEG avi etc and select real player as the application to open the file with.
the red crosses probably indicate that the file does not exist at the specifed location ie the file has been moved but the index is still there.
