You will have to file a criminal complaint in Iowa. This will probably have to be signed by you in person. However, verify that fact with the local police.
You may not necessarily have to appear in court. Many of these matters are "plea bargained" down to a lesser charge. That being said, I would still recommend that you be available to appear in court if required.

Yes. You have to file in Iowa because that's where the crime happened. At some point you will need to be there in person and I think it'll be right away when you swear that what you are reporting is true.

if the crime is a federal crime you can file anywhere. if via internet and you were in Texas at the time; file in Texas will work. if you were physically in Iowa when it occured and its a tort (civil wrong, as opposed to a criminal wrong) matter; file in Iowa. Somebody behaves 'tortiously' when they harm other people's bodies, property, or legal rights, or breach a duty owed under statutory law.
