I have a whole house full of stuff to liquidate. My neighbor was having a lawn sale Saturday, so I put some things out too. I was set up by 10AM. Nobody even stopped until after 1PM and only about 4 cars stopped all day and I only sold $1 of stuff! It wasn't because of a lack of traffic by our houses. I didn't see anyone leaving the neighbors with any purchases either. I had a sale years ago and there was a better turnout and more buyers. What's going on with garage sales?

I live in a town were rummaging is like gospel. In the last 2 weekends, I have dropped more than $300.00 rummaging. It is not worth the price at the store for shorts that my boys are going to wreck by school time again.

Just my opinion

I used to go to garage sales frequently. I know *I've* quit going as much due to so many people trying to sell junk at new retail prices. For example, at the last sale I went to, the party had a used (dirty and beat up) bread machine with a tag on it for $35. I can get one new for that!

Another problem is that too many people are buying the leftover junk from one sale and having their own sale with the stuff that nobody wanted to buy the first time. After hitting a few of those, I don't care to keep trying.

Then there are the collectible dealers. They show up before the sale is even open and buy up everything worth having. I can't get to every sale when it starts, so by the time I get there, the "good" stuff is gone.

Parking is another consideration. If there isn't an easy place to park, I'll pass it by.

I can only speak for myself in saying that I've stopped going to garage sales. Ten years ago, that's how I spent my weekends, when gas was a buck a gallon. I'd go all over the place following the classified ads. Now I've accumulated so much, I don't need to go anymore, added to the fact that with the economy the way it is, I need my money for necessities, not trinkets and dust catchers that seem to be the stock of every tag/lawn/garage sale. Don't get your hopes up making a big amount at a lawn sale. I think people are just tired of paying to haul someone else's junk away.

I sympathize with your situation. I had the same luck recently. I had a box of FREE stuff, and nobody even took anything out of it - so how can you sell stuff when you can't give it away? In my area EVERYTHING is depressed. People are just holding on to their money, I guess, until they see how the economy goes. I can't even get the local relator to sell my house. He said he's not taking on any more clients right now because he hasn't sold a house in 8 months! Also where I'm located, the gas prices are about 10 to 15 cents above the national average. People just aren't out joy riding anymore. They want to get where they're going and get back ASAP.

Some of my favorite "treasures" I have found at yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores....I also have had yard sales and some days are good and some days just aren't as good. Was the sale advertised in the local paper, were flyers for it put, were your signs clear, was bad weather pending? There are so many different things that could be the problem. Where I live yard sales are going strong!

Maybe they would rather shop on eBay? Maybe people are less likely to drive around like they used to, with the current gas prices. (Or if they were driving by already, they might be in a hurry?) I myself don't usually stop at garage sales; I never seem to find anything good. Sorry you didn't have better luck though. :(

My husband won't let me stop if one started the day before or if he sees any clothing in the sale.. So I quit.

The only difference between trash and garage sale items is how close you put the stuff to the curb.
