Because she was one of the first feminists. She knew how to write (not many women knew at those times) what to write and to who. Her writing was an eye opener for many women of that century and I guess by People you mean mostly men and very few women who disliked her writings, her opinions and her being a innovator in women's rights.

She wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), which calls for women and men to be educated equally. Men did not like this as they opposed equality and preferred male dominance. Someone wrote a satirical pamphlet A Vindication of the Rights of Animals, a a scit on her work.

She commentated favorably on the French Revolution which made her unpopular with Conservatives.

She had a daughter with a man who she was not married to and then got pregnant again by another man, although she did marry the second man.

Mary Shelley's mother was very disliked because she championed the causes of women at a time when women's rights in Europe and around the world were minimal at best. She was an independent woman and "dared" to express her opinions in a male dominated society.
