Like most empires, it had its good points and bad points. It did leave its colonies with a good infrastructure and the ability to govern themselves. It also exploited those colonies and people for wealth and material resources.

When I was at school, we used to have an "Empire Day". We didn't get thee day off, but we could turn up in our Girl Guide uniforms - (or Brownies). There was a song:
"Empire Day. The 24th May.
If they don't give us a holiday
We'll all run away"
The atlas's we used, looked like the Brits owned everything - lots of red on the world map. "The sun never set" & that stuff. The Royal Family spoke in very cut-glass accents. There was a lot of poverty and We had TERRIBLE TEETH!

The British Empire has a long history of civilized people who had the most extensive empire in the world. The "colonies" have had a proud association with them for centuries.

Today- Just members of the United Kingdom, England, Canada, Ireland etc.
Used to include India and the US and others, but we left.
Over a Century ago, The UK was quite colonial, but lots was different then.
