you really shouldn't be worried. a colposcopy isn't laser treatment. it's a big microscope your doctor will use to look over your cervix.

when you go in for the procedure, and this procedure is not embarassing at all, they'll ask you to undress from the waist down when they leave the room. when they come back they'll position you for the scope, and then they'll use a speculum to open you up. the norm. the doctor will clean around your cervix, take a little brush and take some cells from the inside of your cervix to have those tested as well, then he/she will put a vinegar solution onto your cervix which causes any abnormal areas to appear. your doctor will then take the colposcope and use it to magnify these spots.

if neccessary, your doctor will take biopsies of each abnormal area. the biopsy itself isn't painful, it will just feel like a pinch. if you have specimens taken for a biopsy, you will (maybe) have some light cramping.

all in all, you will be fine. when your doctor gets the results back from both the hpv test and the colpo, that's when he/she will determine what needs to be done next.

An abnormal result shows that the cervical cells appear pre cancerous but this does NOT mean you have cancer, you are been treated so this is good, ab cells will only dvelop into cancer over a long period of time, years in fact, if they were not treated.A colposcopy is a bit like a smear test, but they use a special camera called a colposcope to get a clearer image of the cervix where the ab cells are. They will take a small biopsy and do another smear, the biopsy goes to the lab and this will determine the grade of cells, CIN 1,2 or 3.Once they know what the grade is they will proberbly offer you treatment called LLETZ which will get rid of the cells. To help you relax before you go take a couple of painkillers, although they will give you a local anaesethetic so you wont feel a thing,if you are treated there and then, you will have some abdominal cramping like a period, but try to relax as this will help with your recovery afterwards the more tense you are you will ache more afterwards. Hope that has given you some info.

I had a colposcopy done a while back following two abnormal results, and the procedure is similar to a smear test - just that the doctor is able to take a closer look at the cells. The doctor swabs a type of dye on your cervix which show is meant to show up any abnormal/cancerous cells on a camera type thing (they dont put the camera in you though). Its not painful, it feels the same as when you have a smear test. Luckily for me i got the all clear, and just had to go to the doctors 6mths later for a follow up just to make sure my cells were still ok, then got the ok and now its back to the every 3year test. Hope this helps & all the best.

It doesn't mean you have cancer. They can see the changes in the cells of your cervix before they become cancer, up to ten years in advance.

What your smear probably shows is that you have some changes in these cells and they will probably do a biopsy (take a small sample of tissue) to examine more closely. Then if it does appear that you need more treatment, they can remove the offending cells under local anaesthetic. Then you'll need to have your smear repeated every 6 months for a while until they're happy that everything is back to normal.

Hope it goes well for you, all the best.

It means that abnormal cells were found. It could be anything from an infection to cancer. You should not be worried because you do not know. Whenever you go to the doctor and get test results, always insist that they explain the results to you. You have a right to be proactive. Call the doctor and ask them to explain your test results. Keep calling and demand answers in a nice way.

If you are going for a colposcopy then they will use a camera to check for abnormal cells and remove them to stop anything resulting in cancer.

Its very normal and loads of women have it done daily.

It wont hurt more than a smear and they wont carry out any treatments without your permission.

You don't say how they are abnormal. There are a variety of abnormal results, from mild dysplasia (inflammation) to a cancer. You will probably have a colposcopy. Your doctor will look carefully at your cervix with a colposcope, basically a low power microscope, and biopsy any areas that appear abnormal.

usually it means you have to go and have another one to double check the results, depending on how abnormal the results were, I wouldn´t worry just yet. I´m a man I know nothing about smear results but I´ve heard many many women talk about the abnormal results and the course of action has always been the same.

Dont worry, most women have to go for some laser treatment (colposcopy) at some point. Its not cancer, its the cells that have changed slightly and show potential for cancer to POSSIBLY start in about 10 years,. They burn them off so there is no chance of them developing at all. Its really ok, 2 of my friends have had it and my mum. They are fine now, had 6 monthly check ups at first and everything is normal. You will prob never have to have any more treatment.

i an no doctor, athough i had abnormal smears ten years ago, when you have an abnormal smear it means that the cells have started to change, most do not go on to become cancer cells, but it is important to go to the hospital to have this checked, i had to have a cone biopsy and then a further one 3 months later, i was checked for 5 years and am now due a 5 year smear, please do not worry most women go on to be told that everygthing is problem but please do attend your hospital appointment, i am a big baby but i found the tests at the hospital easy and very reasurring.
