The parameter that has to do with eyestrain is refresh rate and not resolution, though working in very high resolutions with very small font-size would produce strain.
A refresh rate of at least 85 Hertz is recommended. This refresh rate is a notch above the minimum (60 Hz) of a monitor. The monitor runs at 60 Hz when it is at the highest resolution it can support and so, it would run at 85 Hz when it is a rung below on resolution. Standard 85 Hz resolutions for different monitors are:
15" - 800X600
17" - 1024X768
19" - 1280X1024

For CRTs:
75Hz or 85 Hz refresh rate.
A resolution where you can comfortably read text.
For LCDs:
60 Hz refresh rate.
The resolution should match the native resolution of the panel.
Adjust the DPI setting to produce a font size that you can read comfortably. (Display properties - Settings tab - Advanced button - General tab)
Anything other than the native resolution will cause the panel to scale the image wich will make it look blurry.

resoulution is not as important as refresh rate. If you are using a lcd monitor you dont have to worry about it.. if you are using a crt i would suggest using the highest refresh rate your monitor supports at whatever resolution you are using.
As for the resolution I.M.O. 1024x768 for a 19 inch, and 800X600 for a 17 inch

Whatever you can read comfortably at around 20 inches from the screen. I you can read everything without any strain at this distance you shouldn't have a problem
