lol "explain active directory..." dude, there's entire books about the subject. in short - active directory is a network management "tool" (or mmc) for managing users/computers/policies, etc.

Your question is extememely vague, as another user pointed out you can write an entire book on Active Directory.

To sum it up control of computers, users, and other peripherals such as printers and faxes from a single point of administration in a domain environment.
