Coroded 1-1/2" galvanized pipes are being replaced with PVC for pool plumbing between pupmp, filter, heater etc. I intend on using steel for the first several feet from the heater. What type of connection/union should be used to connect the PVC to the steel?

Easiest would be to end the steel pipe with a screwed nipple, and the use a female adapter pvc piece that will screw onto the metal pipe and socket glue to your pvc pipe. I think a union at this point would also be a good idea, incase you ever have to change out the steel pipe. The union will make taking apart the section of pipe easier. You can add a short piece of straight pvc pipe off the female adapter and glue on a union so you can disconnect the steel to pvc connection in the future easier.

Add a threaded to glued adapter to the end of the steel pipe. I would advise using a steel coupling and a male plastic adapter. Statistics are proving that female threaded PVC adapters are more prone to cracking. The idea for a union is also a great idea.

Get a 1-1/2 schedule 40 female adapter, and connect to it with 1-1/2 pvc.

each and all the solutions are incorrect. percentis against the regulation for potable water (eating) your place's water furnish would be traveling for the time of the installation. purchase a BRASS compression installation and use brass pipe or copper tubing to furnish the anti-siphon valve to the sprinkle manifold. this is the splendid way. the rest is one million/2-assed.
