Hydrochloric acid furnishes H+ or H3O+ in water, which is a catalyst. That means that the H+, H3O+ is regenerated after hydrolysis of each ester molecule. Therefore, you don't have to add as many moles of HCl as there are moles of ester. You just have to have the pH of the water "pretty acid." It would be good to have a recipe to follow.
