I didn't know until I made it home, that I'd put too much oil. I had driven the car no faster than 40 mph and it took me about 10 minutes to arrive home. I noticed the smoke smell about 3 minutes before I arrived home. I've been reading up this morning, so I know now what could happen to the vehicle from too much oil. But since the engine was still working when I switched the car off, I was wondering if the engine can still be saved, and if so, how do I remove the extra oil? Once the extra oil is drained, will the engine still stop working?
Thanks to anyone willing to answer my questions.

The easiest way is to remove the drain plug and drain it.
The drain plug is on the very bottom of the engine. If there is any kind of service center that offers oil changes reasonably close, you should have the oil changed. If you overfilled it by more than 2 quarts DO NOT DRIVE IT. If you added less you can get it to the service center (15 miles or less) if you do not know where the drain plug is, call AAA or a tow truck to get it down to be serviced. If you do not already know so, many community colleges offer classes on basic vehicle maintenance. Sometimes the easiest things to some of us, isn't easy for the rest of us. I have 3 clients that are surgeons, but do not have the first clue about how to check the fluid levels. It's good to know even just the basics, it can save you a hassle, and some money in times just like this. I am certain you did not cause a major problem, and your car will be fine.

A lot depends on how much you over filled the oil. If it's half a litre or so, you are unlikely to do any damage. If it's more, you could blow the oil seals from too much pressure. You will soon see if this happened, because there will be oil dribbles all down the engine, and puddles of oil under the car where you've parked.
Your best bet is to undo the drain plug in the sump and let some out into a suitable receptacle under the car. Then check the oil and then drain some more if it's still too full or top up if you've taken too much out.
NB : If you need to top up a bit, rather use new oil; not the stuff you've just drained ...

Depends on how overfull it was...a quart or less should not be too bad....what happens is if the level is too high, the spinning crankshaft will whip it into a froth and the oil pump may not suck up solid oil but foam and you could lose oil pressure...did your oil pressure gauge or warning light indicate low pressure? Probably was no damage if you didn't hear any noises coming from the engine. Just drain out the oil and refill to the correct level and keep an eye on the oil pressure for a while.

I don't get it, one minute you say your engine is working the next minute you say it isn't?
Anyway's, Get a clean containerthat is big enough,
When the engine is cold and drain all the oil out, refit the drain plug and using the oil you just drained, refill to the correct level.
With the smoke it should stop after a couple of days driving, if it does not, then take it to a shop and get them to check it out.

make sure the engine is cool, then loosen the oil pan drain plug, do not remove- the oil come out too fast. you should have a wide pan to collect the dripping oil.
monitor the dip stick oil level, and when you are at the maximum amount, tighten the drain plug.
hope this helps.
