1999 Oldsmobile Bravada. Roughly 100k miles. I just got done having a new fuel pump installed for failure, also had the fuel filter changed. Within days after having this done, the service engine soon light came on, yet no new performance issues have been noticed. I have experienced Transmission slip between 1st and second, and between 2nd and third, but this has happened before the fuel pump. The light went off for a week or so - thought it was fuel related as I noticed it off after refueling. This time I refueled the light came back on again! Suggestions? Thoughts? Where would I begin?

Many auto parts stores will read the code number with the hope of selling you a EGR valve or something. Wirte down the code and freeze frame data then report back to us. Could be as simple as the locking gas cap you put on is leaking in air. or as complex as a slipping transmission. Yes transmission slip can turn on a check engine light. GMC jimmys chevy s10's Bravadas all suffer from weak cat converters especally at 100,000 miles. And talk about poor gas mileage!

For a quick answer to the problem, take it to Auto Zone and ask them to hook up the analyser ( I can't remember the correct name...lol). This hooks up to the computer in the car to "read" the codes that pop up when the check engine light is on. The codes will tell you where the problem is in the car. The Auto zone tech can then tell you what the code means (or you can get on the 'net and do a search. That will give you a starting point. As for the transmission slip, have you checked the fluid level? It may just need topped off, or changed. The tech at Auto Zone can show you how to check this is you are unsure. Good luck.

Sometimes the "Service Engine Soon" light will come on if you don't tighten your gas cap after refuelling. Another possibility is that the gas cap may be going bad.

Take the car over to Autozone or another auto parts store, they usually have a device that will read the code(s) off of the computer in the car. Once you find that out, it will help you determine what is turning the light on.

This orange 'tattle-tail' light tells you that the engine is operating outside the specs the computer monitors. It could be the fuel causing it to read too much oxygen or too little through the sensor. There are many things that will make this light come on. As long as the engine runs smooth and there is no change in performance or gas mileage, the fluids are all topped off and not dirty (changed at their regular intervals), and everything works, carry on. Don't completely ignore it, but it isn't anything to be alarmed about. When you get the RED light indicating low oil pressure or the engine is overheating, THAT is when to pull over immediately and turn the ignition off.

Read the computer. I think you can do that on an Olds by turning the key on and off three times in a row quickly, then watching the check engine light and reading the blinks of the light. Try it. Or take it to Auto Zone store, they do it free out in their parking lot.
