When in France, eat what the French eat! Why on earth would you travel and not sample another culture's foods!

Of course, the French don't really eat breakfast the way Americans do. So, for your petit dejeuner, or little lunch, may I suggest:

Coffee is the big thing and many French begin with a big, bowl-sized cup of café au lait which is eaten with brioche, a croissant or a plain piece of toast with butter and jelly.

Of course you can have the, tea, if you prefer.

Some times, jus (juice) and fruit (spelled the same in French and English) are served.

Bon appetit.

Considering that it's not really French in origin you might have a hard time.

There's some conflicting stories of where it came from but the best would have it's origins in NY and the guy that created it was named "French". So therefore they named it "French toast" after the creator.

Other stories say that the cajuns in Louisiana would make "pain perdu" in the same manner and as they spoke French, it was called "French toast" by the tourists.

We always called it "pain dore" which may be a French Canadianism but it may also be a name that the French would understand.

Fries are reffered to as "pommes frites" in France. A Belgian legend claims that the term "French" was introduced when British or American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time. But the term "French fried potatoes" had been in use in America long before the Great War. The french toast is known as "pain perdu" in France. Some people claim that this dish was called "German toast" in the U.S. before World War I and was changed to "French toast" because of anti-German sentiment. Indeed, a popular cookbook from 1918 does refer to it by the name "German toast." However, the term "French toast" can be found in print in the U.S. as early as 1871. The Oxford English Dictionary cites usages of "French toast" in English as early as 1660 (toasted bread with wine, orange juice, and sugar), and cites an egg-based recipe of the same name from 1882. It has also been called "American toast" in the U.S., where there is a story that it was invented in 1724 by a man named Joseph French in a roadside tavern near Albany, New York.
