I have an elderly relative who has accumulated 10 years worth of paid ahead subscriptions to Readers Digest.

She just keeps getting phone call after phone call.

Which party does enough to protect the elderly?

You can protect your aunt. If you know about it, you can telephone the company and inform them of this problem.

Different people are selling the subscriptions and do not know this is occurring.

Why would you think this should be a political matter? By the way, she may be doing it on purpose.

They have no way of knowing that she is 85. And since this is a Capitalist society, where the mighty $$ rules, they don't care.

My aunt died 2 years ago. Despite many letters explaining her demise, we are constantly inundated with subscription deals, pleas for money, and God knows what else...all in her name.

Certainly, her number probably needs to be put on the "do no call" registry.

But before you do that, is the poor thing lonely and isolated? Going mad to speak with someone, even if she has to commit to a subscription? This scenario is absolutely possible.

This isn't a function of politics. This is typical of old age. Even if she's completely out-of-it, embrace her and let her last days on earth be as sweet and mellow as possible.

She was probably a sharp cookie a lifetime ago. The vastness of her knowledge and experience, however mundane it may be, must be respected and acknowledged.

Nothing is sadder than growing old, being helpless and worst still, being not only alone, but isolated. I can feel this and I'm only 53!

A lot of older people actually enjoy that magazine, so maybe that's the way she wanted it.

Someone should talk to her --- there are lots of people in their 30's who buy worthless stuff.
