Politics and sports have been intwined many times in the past. The easy and quick examples are the US boycotting the Olympics in Moscow to protest the USSR's involvement in Afghanistan, The USSR boycotting the Olympics in 84 in LA. Hitler using the Olympics to further his propaganda in Berlin in 36'. Athelets and muscians refusing to play sporting events and concerts in S. Africa to protest Apartide. Those are just some of the recent examples, but it has gone on since the first games were playd in ancient Greece.
