My husband was hired by a local police department and they paid to put him through the academy. There were a few people in his class that were paying their own way through the academy without being hired anywhere, but they were few. Check with your local department and see if they require academy training prior to the hiring.

Good luck to you.

Most police departments are now looking for college graduates or at least a 2 year degree. Look at the particular department you want to join to see what their requirements are.

There are police science degrees you can get from the technical colleges, but not all police departments recognize these. The larger departments will then still have you go through their own training to train you in the specifics of how they want you to do police work according their policies and procedures.

Start investigating what the departments in your area or where you may want to work have for entrance requirements. Some will hire you with the understanding that you will complete a 2 year associate degree in so much time after being hired. Just do your homework and find out what they want in the departments you are interested in working for. Good luck. Police work, while demanding is a very self rewarding career.

No matter what your previous education, you will have to go thru the police academy before you start work as a police officer. You may get hired by a police department before you attend but you still must complete the school.

I assume the Police Academy provides all the theoretical and practical training that a police officer needs and he/she is tested on what he/she has learned before being set loose on the community. There is no other way to become a police officer

Usually you are hired by a police department, then you are sent to a police academy by the department that hired you. The department pays the bills.
