On balance, so long as we keep our rebate, then we are better off.

Of course, that will change if we ever lose our rebate ...

Those who hate the EU, have you NEVER EVER taken a budget flight within Europe for £20 with Easyjet or one of the others like BMI Baby, Go, or Ryanair?

I personally think we should keep our rebate AND pay less, say we should pay what France has to pay, plus we should get a rebate!

We are much much better off. The EU has given the UK millions of pounds for town/city centre re-development which has had a real impact on my home town (Middlesbrough), its also gives the Government direction and impetus on issues like the environment, employment and consumer protection. The migrants which come to the UK to work legally and pay taxes keep the economy afloat. To leave the EU (I know that's not what you are asking, but no doubt you'll get somebody ranting before long) would trigger economic catastrophe in the UK.

A bit of both, Europe is emerging as a possible superpower, the eastren block countries are building their economies at a fantastic rate. However, we now have no control over agriculture, mortage hikes, etc. It was the EEC (EU) that helped Ireland (my country) to its feet and then our economy took off and its now the fifth richest in the world. Overall, I'm grateful for the EU and what it is doing

As the member of the EU that gives most and takes least benefits I would say we are worse off.

No-one really knows since the Treasury has never done a formal cost/benefit analysis.

I suspect better for various reasons - travel, increased trade, political - but it's currently impossible to say in strictly financial terms.

Much better off. There will come a time when we will discover that if we had remained outside Europe, our economy would have crashed and we might not have recovered. Europe ensures security for us. Do you seriously think the Empire or the US would come to our aid?
