I have hitch hiked a lot ,once from Seattle to Phoenix.....once from..minneapolis to Tampa ....and once again from..D.C. to Chicago.....that was the hardest as people were more hostile on the east coast....I also hopped a freight train from Chicago to Fargo North dakota....all experiences of my youth, I took a year off of college and wandered the U.S....mostly by thumb ...sometimes by bus....between the two I'd rather thumb it

Oh yeah, way back in the 70's all the time ... and in the 80's a few times by necessity ... but not since about 1987.
I would never do it now, and I would strongly discourage any women from doing so, and even strong young men I would caution. Things are different nowadays ... and most people won't pick hitchhikers up.

I used to hitchhike around the D.C. metro area in the early '80s. This was mostly either to save on bus/rail fare, or if I'd missed a connection and would've otherwise been very late for an appointment.
