This is a seafaring tradition that may stem from the fact that a ship's captain was always responsible for anything that happened to his command, whether he was at fault or not and in the enquiry to follow he would be "sunk". The captain should certainly be the last person off the ship after he/she has ensured the safety of passengers and crew. If a ship is sinking fast however then it is to be expected that the human instinct for survival would take over and the captain would be likely to leg it.

I guess i would think "what a foolish valiant gentlemen". Once the captain knows everyone is accounted for -then he should leave the ship. Nothing is gained by the death of the captain at that point.

if a captain stayed behind to ensure all passengers were able to to escape safely then he would be doing his job and be a top man for putting others first.if he left the ship before all passengers were safe he'd be a selfish idiot,i think once the passengers are safe then the captain should make his escape if its not to late .

I think captains should do their best to see that all passengers get off of the ship, then providing their is time for self-rescue, then they should abandon the ship as well, it's just common sense in my opinion...

I don't think it would happen these days - it would cost the owners of the ship a fortune in damages for the family - either that or the insurance wouldn't pay anything to the family as it would be considered suicide. Actually I'm not sure if life insurance pays out on suicide....

Hero - for trying to help others, but I'd expect that of the whole crew and not just the captain
