well, i dont think that those beliefs are totally universal, but yes,,,,, i see many negative results from each one,,,,,, my personal religion,,,, Unitarian Universalist, i believe is true for me,,,,,,, but i also do not believe there is one true way for all,,,, its a personal thing,,,,,,,, so hence i dont have conflict with others and their religions,,,, though they might with me,,,,,,,,, either one of the two that you mention, if used to feel "better than", or "the only correct way" , can lead to disaster and conflict and hate.

The belief that the tenets of your religion are true is in no way dangerous, nor is the belief that you live in a good country. The danger comes when people start to think that they have a right to impose their beliefs on others.

In some extreme cases (where it is a matter of fundamental safety or human rights), this kind of intervention is justified, but not otherwise. For example, if there is genocide, slavery, or physical abuse going on in a given religion or country, others are justified in interving to protect those who do not wish to be victimized by it. However, any religion or nation that does not directly harm people ought to be left to proceed as it sees fit. Belief is perfectly harmless, as long as it is not manifested in the violation of human rights.

Only when people miss the point of religion does it become disastrous. God (whatever you choose to call him) is love. Anyone who hurts others in the name of their God is missing the point. If people were more religious, more loving & spiritual, the world would be a better place. Unfortunately a lot of monsters throughout history have committed atrocities under the guise of religion.

Nothing wrong with nationalism if it is pride in your country. Unfortunately fanatics can carry it too far and hate other countries.

The bottom line is love yourself & others, be a good person & you can't go wrong. Don't be hating. We're all in this world together.

Depends....technically it can be quite useful...not to mention approaching life from different perpectives can lead to unique insights. I'm sure a buddhist monks learns a different sort of knowledge about life than the pastor.

Also, belief can spur healthy, rational actions that usually require an large degree of self-discipline without.

It depends, believing in a God isn't a bad thing, most people need this to handle life.
But if they start thinking they have to do crazy things for this God.. Now that's a problem! And that's just it, there are no limits for some. I don't see why one religion would be more than another..

Read: Jon Glover's "Humanity"-- it will help you to discern an answer to your question. But in regards to religion and nationalism, we have met the enemy, and the enemy cannot be scapegoated to an ideological generality (like religion or nationality), the enemy is human nature itself.
