I have tried for days now, I have tapped, I have put the top end on and tried to put the bottom end on, I have tried to open it up and make it larger without success, is it possible that the size they gave me is too small? I have never used a C-CLIP before so I don't know if there is a trick, but in any case, it really seems like it won't fit.

Hopefully you have a standard retaining clip with a hole in each end of the clip. If so, you can buy pliers made for this installation. Sears has them and Home Centers. If you have an "E" clip (looks like an E when layed flat) I would swap it out with a standard retainer clip. These have come to be known as "Jesus" clips because thats what you will say a lot while trying to install it.
