well tim,if its just internet and photo editing that you do then the geforce fx5500 is plenty good enough
even for the odd game the fx5500 can reach some acceptable frame rates, but will struggle on higher resolutions
the main specs on the nvidia geforce fx5500 are ...........................
Inno3D Geforce FX 5500
Chipset Geforce FX 5500
Memory 256MB DDR
Core Frequency 270MHz
Memory Frequency 400MHz
RAMDAC 350MHZ
Interface AGP 8x/4x
Pixel Per Clock 2
Memory Bus 128-bit
Max. Resolution 2048 x 1536
SLI Ready NA
Output 1. DVI
2. Standard 15-Pin D-Sub
..even as a lower class graphic card this can still push a max resolution of 2048x1536 which is excellent, and with a pixel and shader model 2.0 this is also fully vista compatible
however for a excellent upgrade tim, obviously we want to stay with nvidia, mainly to prevent any driver conflicts,i would recoemmend the Gainward BLISS GeForce 7600 GT "Golden Sample"(http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-046-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411),this is a brilliant agp card with pixel and shader model 3.0,thats the next one up from the fx5500 and much better at displaying more complicated effects in modern games
with a core clock speed of 575mhz this will run most new games(fear,doom3,quake4)at high quality settings and resolutions of 1024x768 and 1280x1024,and with a excellent memory running at 1500mhz theres sure to be no slow down of frames
you also get a dual dvi support of up to 2560x1600 and with a full 12 pixel pipelines(4 pielines in the fx5500) this is a excellent all round upgrade to the fx5500
here is its full specifications......................
GeForce 7600 GT Core running at 575MHz+
- 256MB GDDR3 Extreme Memory running at 1500MHz+
- 12 Pixel Pipelines
- Designed For Extreme HD Gaming – Delivering Ultra Realistic Gaming Experiences
- Dual link DVI support (Upto 2560x1600 resolution)
- Shader Model 3.0 Support
- True High Dynamic Range Rendering Support – Based on Open EXR technology
--------------------------------------------------------------------
however tim,if money isnt the object and you want the best and fastest a.g.p card on the planet then let me introduce you to the Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-137-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=403)
this is officially the fastest agp card avalible, and its all down to its pixel pipelines, and you get bags of them with this card,in total ,a massive 36 pixel pipelines, thats 24 more than the geforce 7600gt and 32 more than your current fx5500
however its not just pixel pipelines that makes this such a fast card, with a core clock speed of 580mhz and a memory clock speed of 1400mhz(1.4ghz) this will even give some pci-express cards a run for their money
please note though, this is a very large card and you must make sure it will fit in your case, and also it takes 2 x 4pin molex power connectors so a p.s.u(power supply unit)upgrade may be needed, but a 400watt psu should be more than enough(even 350watt may do)
this card is probally the best card to buy if your into gaming and want max frame rates and ultimate effects, its also 100% vista compatible, anyway tim heres the specifications...
Powered by ATI Radeon X1950 PRO - 580MHz (RV570 80nm)
- 512MB-256bit 8 channel GDDR3 memory - 1.40GHz
- 36 Pixel shader processor
- Ultra-threaded SM 3.0 Engine
- 512-bit Ring-bus
- HDCP Enabled!!
other cards to think about tim are the Asus GeForce N7600GS Silent HTD (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-116-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411),the HIS ATI Radeon 9550 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-009-HT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=403)
but if its looks in a graphics card you want tim, then take a look at the HIS ATI Radeon X1650 XT ICEQ TURBO (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-072-HT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=403),this card is a massive peice of work with a cooling system that would run a office buildings air conditioning system,it looks good with its iceq cooling system but allthough i like it and im sure it will do its job,i cant help but hink it looks a bit "fisher price graphic card"know what i mean tim
anyway mate,i will let you take a look at all these cards and make a desicion, and any more advice mate let me know
good luck mate!

I suspect that your motherboard will have an AGP slot, as I don't think that the FX5500 has ever been available in PCI-E format.
There remains the possibility that the AGP slot is 4x not 8x, or worse, that only PCI slots are available. The first link below has other links which should help you determine which slot you have.
Assuming that you have an AGP 8x slot (the most likely) then
http://www.scan.co.uk still have quite a selection of AGP cards - you'll have to pay at least £50 to get a worthwhile improvement on your 5500...
Look at http://www.tomshardware.co.uk to help decide which performs best - it allows comparison of a number of cards - not the 5500 or 6200 - they are both under the radar...
It's all down to how much you want to spend, and whether the card is supported by any particular game you have in mind

That is a good one. Unless you mean for gaming.
Go to your favourite gaming website to find out what graphics cards are supported and recommended.

depending on what you wanna do, the 256 MB Nvidia GeForce 6200 is a decent enough card, they also have the 512 MB 6200 Model, but it will cost more.
