Right now I'm trying to figure out which would better serve me on such a career path: a degree in chemistry, or a degree in biochemistry?

You need to talk with some people who are currently working in this field and see what their advice is. (Not some random guy on Yahoo!!!)

When people do research that involves drugs there are many restrictions on who can do the research. In many cases it requires a physician or registered pharmacist to oversee the testing. OR, you might need certification in animal management.

"Pharmacology" is kind of vague, so you need to narrow down what you mean by that, and then go to the local med school, pharmacy college, or university research lab and talk to a practitioner.
