Its a new Compaq (theres a 504 somewhere in the name) and has a wireless switch. Do i need to get a wireless router or can i just access it without any additional hardware?

you have to get a wireless router.
when you get it open the bluetooth in the lasptop then enable the wireless connection then press on search for wireless connections and when it appears for u click on it then click connect. good luck :-)

you need to have a wireless router i was able to access mine without anymore hardware than that
go to control panel and then to Internet access then connect to net work just follow the instructions from there that's how i did mine. oh ye make sure you have got the wireless switch switched on i made that mistake took me about 2hours 2 figure out what was wrong

You need a Wireless router that is compatible with your laptop WiFi card.
Ask for recommendations from the store where you bought your laptop.

The Wireless function on the laptop does not mean you will get internet on it :-)
However, if you visit any locations (restaurants, cafes', etc) that offer free wireless internet, that's where this function on the laptop is useful.
