It depends on what you mean by 'underground'. If you mean rappers who rap for the art and are underground because they're not trying to sell out, and not just make the kind of stuff that holds black people back then I can name some names. (Depends on how far back you wanna take it too.)

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Blackalicious, Jurassic 5, Heiroglyphics, Skillz, De La Soul.

Those should give you a good mix of good raw MCing and some stuff that has a message too. Check around your town too, because chances are if your town is anything like here in Boston, then you probably have a bunch of local cats right under your nose.

IF you meant underground, as in 'just not famous yet', then all you have to do is turn on MTV, BET, your local radio station, or pick up the new issue of The Source. Those are the main places to go to find what I call, "The Mainstream Rap Recipe" that I'd say 95% of rap is made from. To make this recipe, all you need is:

1. A VERY simple beat, looped up over and over again. And if you can find a song that hasn't been sampled to death already (THANKS PUFFY!!!), then you can add 4 bars of that too. This is true since sadly almost nobody in Hip Hop can play instruments. So who needs talent when you have technology? (They're even killing DJing)

2. More important than the lyrics, you need a catchy hook/chorous. It doesn't have to make sense as long as it sounds cool.

3. Lyrics MUST include the following: Killing, and selling drugs. (Nas said it best: 'Heinous crimes help record sales more than creative rhymes.') You also need to have degrading remarks and names about women ( I love it when I see women dancing to that or even singing along, like the Whistle Song.)

So now you have your beat, your hook, and your standard-issued ignorant lyrics. Congratulations! You just made a rap song. But what if you blow up and the guys in the suits want you to make a video for your new hit???

Have no fear! Just add these steps to the first 3 above:

4. Rent out the most expensive cars, and jewelery you can find for the video shoot. Maybe work in a line or two talking about your new bling. Of course 9 out of 10 rappers could NEVER afford the lifestyle they're fronting to us, but it's the image that sells aparently.

And finally number 5. What MTV/BET-worthy video is complete without naked women?

And there you have it. Don't believe me? Try my recipe out next time you're watching rap videos. Sorry if I went on a rant, but I tried to give you some good rappers too, but I'm just a little frustrated that 99% of rap today SUCKS. Dip Set? Young Jeezy? Yung Buck? Dem Franchise Boyz? You kidding me??? Guess Hip Hop might really be dead.

Because going by what you said, its not the underground rappers that have the beef with mainstream rappers, ITS THE LISTENERS! But if the underground rappers have the majority of hip hop listeners, then why diss the mainstream?? They already have them beat! People are getting tired of them and the corporation's BS and want to hear something real. Underground rappers don't have to nothing but keep putting out good quality music.

Two of my favorites are Opio and Edan. Opio's Triangulation Station is amazing I still listen to it often, Edan I've kind of forgotten about to be honest.
