The adage golds good even now. Always speak what matters when it matters.Sometimes not saying a word makes u a winner .Talking in the right quantum in the right verbose makes u a hero.
Remaining silent or talking less or talking extravagantly all are forms of communications which are strictly situational, mood based, and time based.
Talk where u need to remain calm when ur talk doesn't make a difference but see that ur words make the other person better and the ambience a warm and cordial one.
But let never ur words hurt anyone if u do feel they are going to pain others avoid the person and the place since harsh words leave a deep scar than a blow.

Good question... STAR!!
I have to disagree with most of the answers posted above.
Silence was considered golden on the basis of situations when silence amounted to more effective speech. How can this be? It is possible only when our silence is directed towards someone who knows us intimately and therefore can make out what the unspoken words are.
In today's situation, such occasions may sometimes arise in close family circles, if at all... otherwise, no one has any time for anyone else so that one can understand another person so intimately or well enough that he/she can read the unspoken words correctly and react to them in a proper manner. When silence is not understood correctly, it will only be interpreted in a negative way and hence it can be worse than the harshest words we can ever speak.

Silence is still golden.
One will regret blurting out responses much more than keeping silence. Silence gives one time to think with a cool mind and helps to take right decisions in life.

silence is.. just silence! a situation!
if this situation is golden, silver, rusted or whatever depends only on the theme and the situation! l think is more safe to go with golden cause the most dangerous people are those who have few knowledge and they think that they have a lot! so if you give the golden label/price or whatever to silence you protect your ears from a LOT of stupid sentences.. ;o)

Silence is neither Gold nor Silver. It is nature's beautiful music. In most of the times silence will be the best answer for questions which never create problems.Silence will never be rusted but to listen the silence becomes difficult nowadays.

I think Silence is still golden or precious to most people but it has been downgraded to silver. Because people don't care and are inconsiderate/non respectful and rude of other people. So its like it is rusted especially in a movie theater. When you have to tell some one to sshhhhh or shut the f#@k up; its like you need to stab them with rusted nail so they will shut up!

Silence is golden most of the time but sometimes it is foolish to be silent-you need to speak up so in this case you cannot cling to the gold or else you might rust!!!

Where is silence? can you find any place in the world where you can have silence. Population is bursting at its seams and people are financially comfortable and so they are every where form down under to the up above and with their families , children, pets etc make noise. Even at the top of the world they go and make noise. So silence is there in test books only.

Silence in my home would be golden with some diamonds and ruby, jade, and emeralds. It would be sacred, I have two children out of the four that ramble on all day. The more you tell them to be quite the louder they get or the more they ramble about nothing. Silence would be more then great.

silence will get covered with innane, useless rust over the time.
I don't believe one must be silent when there is something to say. Truth always sets us all free no matter what the impact is.
Lying is another thing, but it is better than being silent as long as it is done for good intention.
