A little over a week ago i accidentally pulled my big toe nail up. Well it was pointing straight up at me. I went to the doctor paid over 200 dollars for him to pull it the rest of the way off. He didn't tell me how to bandage it or anything and he wants me to come back in and pay more money so he can tell me how to care for it. I tried looking stuff up online to help me but i didn't find anything very useful. I've been soaking it in Epsom Salt once a day to help clean it, pouring idoine on it and using neosporin and keeping it bandaged.

I was wondering when i should leave it open and if i should start putting something on it to keep it from growing back all funny or funky?

What a jerk of a doctor... At the very least the nurse should have told you how to take care of it.

I've had three nails taken off - two big toenails, and a middle fingernail. No fun.

I used Neosporin, or any type of antibiotic cream for several weeks. Keep it protected with a soft bandage, something more than just a band-aid. Avoid moisture, keep it cool and dry. After bathing, soap it nice and foamy (it'll be quite sensitive), then dry it off completely. Moisture is an enemy... and a friend to bacteria which infects the tissues.

Wearing sandals with socks isn't out ot the question for a couple of weeks, but it tends to be more exposed to frontal toe hits. The growth will be slow, probly won't need a bandage after three weeks or so, and will take like, three/four-plus months to grow back, and will look a bit different than the original toenail. If you see it swelling, turning red, becoming painful, it means that an infection is beginning to start, probably. Keep it dry!!

Really, they want to charge you more money, because you should know how to take care of something like this yourself already or by just asking around.

I'm cheap... Send remittance to my secretary. Have a nice day.

Being athletic, I've lost both of mine several times. There's really nothing to do other than keep it clean. You're on the right track with the antibiotic ointment. It will slowly grow back. You might notice a ridge at the end of the nail as it grows out from under the cuticle. Don't worry, you can trim that at a later time. You just have to be patient.

It will grow back just fine. I did this a couple of years ago. My Dr. only charged seventy five to rip it off.

Stop soaking it now and let the nail bed dry out. It will grow back totally in about six months. You will see the tip of the new nail start creeping out from the base soon.

Ok, first of all, Iodine is not good on an open wound like that. It is a great antiseptic, but not so great on your skin tissues. It will not help with the healing process. Now I know you're thinking, how about Hydrogen Peroxide...SAME THING, do not put it on a wound, it is antiquated to do that these days.

Keep it clean and dry; dab it dry with a clean cloth; apply a thin layer of neosporin over it and keep it bandaged. Make sure the bandage has adequate ventilation to air.

Signs of infection: redness going up toe and excessive swelling, purulent pussing (yellow, green discharge).

when I did mine the nurse cleaned and then put Bacitrician Ointment, a first aid antibiotic, and covered every day for 3 days and then the Bacitrician with band aid and that weekend I did the same at night and then just band aid for a couple days. Now it is in the healing process. I was surprised as the nurse at emergency, VA clinic, use the Bacitrician and I have had same for years to treat small cuts etc and in couple days they are always gone so this is a great product, antibiotic. Picture below is after 16 days.

ok I had the same question he put me on Bactrim pills and then told me to go home he didn't put a banaide on it im a swimmer in the summer and told me I could go swim in 3 days. however my toe isn't hot or have red streaks running up it but my toenail bed is red don't know if this is normal. So what I am doing for mine is what I have read on here for po surgery and that's to soak it in Epson salt, poor peroxide on it dry it put athlete feet on it, and triple antibiotic and cover with band aide did this last night and when I woke up the toe had drained a little bit on the band aide so was I write or wrong im not meaning to step on your page but saying this might help you not sure.

Once the toenail starts growing out put vicks vapor rub on it as this helps the nail and the nailbed...it is an old remedy that seems to work for a lot of people

The nail should grow back properly. If it doesn't I suggest you find a different doctor that doesn't charge so much cos it sounds like he's duping you.
