XP is tested more, so less bugs...but Vista will only get better as it gets tested and fixed, whereas XP is only going to get older and become like 3.1 or something...no one will use it and Vista will be standard
your best bet is to use XP until Vista is tested and fixed of most annoying bugs...probobly in a few months to a year.

Pardon me for jumping in, XP has another 4 years of support life from Microsoft, meaning in the next 4 years, it will still be fully supported, and with such a huge installed base, how one can imagine it goes obsolete is beyond me.
We still have large clients base using NT4 server to run companies with 200+ workstations
Yes, Vista will get better, they have no choice but to improve it, but for now, XP will win everytime.

STAY AWAY FROM VISTA!!!!!
takes a gig plus of memory
not compatible with lots of older equipment,
not compatible with lots of older programs
spies on you and reports almost anything unlicensed
very slow and cumbersome
lots of programming bugs to be worked out
long overdue for a service pack and hasnt been out a year
horrible horrible program.
