Most likely you were infected by a virus/trojan before, and some bright sparks advised you to reinstall Windows XP to bypass the problem, and you prob installed it using the repair mode, so most of the infected files are still hidden, and came over to the new installation during the process.
If you can afford to lose all the information on the computer, you can try a fresh clean re-install, other wise, download some new antivirus software and adware removal software and clean it out first.

For various reasons many have elected to give up bothering with I.E. If you are somewhat computer challenged,(as everybody even the geeks once was),it can be somewhat daunting trying to explore the internet with a browser that does not want to do what you want it to do and keeps cloning itself until your memory runs out.
Not only that, you also have to worry about mysterious viruses and computer illnesses. The best computer health insurance plan is a free anti virus program. No problem there, just check with grisoft for a free A.V.G. download. You do not need a university degree to push the buttons and it scans pretty fast.Run it frequently to keep your computer healthy.
You can download a free Firefox browser from Mozilla.Firefox now caters for more than 10% of the market and has features which enable you to customise it to suit your own personal ways of netsurfing.Make sure you push the buttons to make it your default browser if you want I.E. to stay out of your face.
Firefox supports Yahoo toolbars and there are umpteen extensions available for additional capabilities.Best feature is tabbed browsing, which gets around all those multiple I.E.browser clones opening up.Not bad for free!

Your PC is now screwed up. Try antivirus software. Download AVG Antivirus and install. Then do a full scan. Most of the time it will be ok.
AVG Antivirus http://www.grisoft.com/
If I was you, I will format C:\ (Which has the XP installed) and then re-install. later I will scan the other drives with Antivirus program just to make sure.
More you use your PC, more your PC gets infected with the virus. AVG is well know program. ThisBot and that Bot, I am not sure. so careful when you install what others recommend.

Do you have yahoo toolbar installed? This is know to cause some probs when IE has upgraded. If so uninstall the toolbar.
Download and run CWShredder, it checks for IE problems
http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/CWShredder/
If you dont have an anti-virus running, this one from AVG is free, it updates daily and I think its the best
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
When you download it follow its instructions (very easy) and it installs itself.
Hope this helps
(there are some good free ad/spyware progs too:
adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
ccleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
both are easy to install and you can run them as often as you like)

My advice is, uninstall internet explorer, and install Mozilla Firefox. You won't have the same problems because it doesn't have the bugs that IE has.

It might be Virus/Malware/trojan which is creating the problem. Install a good antivirus/spyware and scan you computer. You can download Mccafee internet suite and scan your computer. you can use it for 30 days.
