Water - essential for life, obviously. Animals get much of their water content from food, especially cats who do not drink much at all if fed on canned foods.
Carbohyrdates - energy
Proteins - energy and growth
Fats - energy, but most often for palatability in modern pet foods
Vitamins and minerals - each one contributes to the health or a different organ or process, like Vitamin A for ocular (eye) health, Vitamin C for binding of cells. Salt is a mineral that does not have much of a place in cat and dog food.

A good cat food should be at least 20% protein, no more than 9% fat, about 30% carbs and say nothing like 'various sugars' in the ingredients. High fibre (about 7%) is also good, and the lower ash content the better.

A good dog food is at least 10% protein, no more than about 7% fat, 30% carbs.

These are my own guidelines by the way, so take them as you will!

water-moisture, needed for proper everything
carbs-energy
protein-cell regrowth, muscle formation ( the only way protein is used for energy is when there is no water, carbs, or fat left in the body)
fats, everything needs fats, certain animals like cats can not make their own so they need it from their diet.
vitamins-proper growth, muslcle funtions, organ functions
(vitamin a helps the eyes)
minerals-same as vitamins, properly balanced food will enable the animal to take advantage of what they are eating.

if youd like to know what foods have this proper balance and what not feel free to ask.

If all of these items are not stated as "coming from natural sources" they are mostly 'filler'. In other words...'man-made replacements' for the all natural version. Besides water...I believe water is utilized to effectively process the food.
