Adult gnats tend to be attracted by carbon dioxide; that’s why people are seeing them around their head and face. Also the buffalo gnat is attracted to darker colors. Physical activity also could attract them, as heavy breathing releases more carbon dioxide. So maybe when your friend exhales she produces more carbon dioxide than you do therefore attracting more gnats that you, but you cant be sure that is the reason. I feel the reason is that she may just be unlucky. Think of it this way, gnats are attracted to carbon dioxide like we are attracted to our favorite snack lets say in this case its a twinkie and when we are hungry we go into the kitchen and see two twinkies sitting of the counter, it doesn't matter which one we choose as long as we are satisfied and get our snack. This is the same case with gnats they see you and your friend in the pool and you both are going to full-fill their desire equally so it doesn't really matter which one of you they choose. Hope it helps have a great day and God bless.

Crain MD is of course right.

But, also, people eat different things which can effect their attractiveness (or not). Tell your friend to eat some onions or garlic a couple hours before she goes in the pool next time and see if that make a difference.
