I'm from the UK and I've been looking around to see how much similar jobs in the US pay but none of the vacancies seem to display any salary info. Is this the norm?

Sometimes. Usually if a company is paying under the normal salary they will not post it. Hourly jobs do this quite often, they do not want to promise a particular wage or salary, as they cannot guarantee that monetary amount. These same companies usually have high turnover as well.

Sometimes a wage is not posted as it may be commission work. Other times it is not listed as they want you to give them a particular amount during initial contact (cover letter) or during interviews. Professional jobs might not list the salary either, but will have extensive requirements for education and experience, these jobs always pay well but they don't want every non-qualified person applying (thus having tons of resumes to sift) or having recruiters getting an idea on a commission (most job recruiters get 15-35% of salary for finders fee).

Let them know what you want up front, it will save you both time. For an idea of wages in US, visit: http://www.salary.com or http://www.salaryexpert.com they will have some basic salary info for free. Can be zoned by zip code and job title.

No it's not - you should get EVERY month/week that you are working for an employer
