Darwins theory of evolution is just opposed to Hinduism. God doesnt need to be conceptualised.he isnt something to b conceptualised but to be known or believed atleast. i believe the scriptures n not the primary school text books. there was no stone age.Lord first created Brahma n he thought who am i ?who created me? he was told to perform austerities for a v.v. v. long time(through God's voice). After that God gave him darshana and explained things to him and insructed him to create the "praja". so the first man that Lord Bhrahma created learnt from Bhrahma directly about God and the creation. acc to scriptures the first men didnt eat animals rather they put efforts to procure divine knowledge and this was followed by procreation.

On the contrary it was during the stone age itself that the concept of god evolved. People fear what they cant understand, in those times people had no knowledge of the nature and considered sun moon etc as god and made offerings to them just like they would make offering to the strongest among their fellows , and this was how religions evolved.

From a more anthropological point of view, Jared Diamond (the author of Guns, Germs, and Steel), writes that priests came into power in society when there were enough food and resources to support more roles than just military and agricultural. He says that the role of priests (or shamans, pastors, etc.) was to provide a theological reason for war (i.e. 'It's ok to kill the other group because God is on our side.').
Since complex societies evolved about 10,000 years ago, I would say that this is about the time that gods became popular in culture.
But you asked about 'God', as in just one of Him. It would be impossible to trace when the idea of one God, as father, became popular but certainly some credit must be given to the Jewish people, who not only were among the first to believe in one God, but also kept an oral (and then eventually written) history of their beliefs. That would make God (just one) about 5-7000 years old.

The day mankind needed to be less than self-reliant, they hit upon the idea of God .A non-existant director of the Play called the Mankind. The actors did not have the trust in their own acting ability and they needed someone to blame if the Play flopped . Any if play survived or won accolodes , it was director's gain.Actors are mere puppets

Most anthropologists believe the concept of the afterlife and supernatural deities coincided with the beginning of ceremonial burials, which first appeared around 70-100,000 years ago.
