I've been a Dino Jr. fan for the last 16 years and definitely encourage you to check them out. Having seen them as a band 4 times and J Mascis (the guitarist) another 3 times, I find them to be one of the more entertaining rock bands out there with large walls of distortion and a continual baals-to-the-wall tempo. The new album is apparently good although personally I have only heard bits and pieces of it. Their first 3 albums (Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug) are perhaps their most solid work(particularly YLAOM). After these Lou Barlow (the bassist) broke off to form Sebadoh amongst other side projects while J continued on with the Dino flag. The next couple of albums were good (Green Mind, Where've You Been) but after that I feel J lost some on the creative side and the work, while still of a good quality, was nowhere near the previous albums. They have reunited to put out the new album (after a tour 2 years ago) and are currently touring for this album. I'm pi**ed though, I have to be out of town for the show and the next night both The Meat Puppets and Fishbone are playing at 2 different venues. As a fan of these bands in their heyday, I really wish they could split the shows out a little more evenly. Oh well.
Like Gina said, J Mascis is god (I must be a guitar nerd). Spin magazine even proclaimed that on the cover circa, oh, 1993. Sonic Youth also wrote what I consider their masterpiece, "Teenage Riot", as a tribute to J.

I'm a musician on a small label. The first song I learned to play was a Dinosaur Jr. song. Kurt Cobain was a huge fan as well. They always were kind of a critic's favorite type of band. They had a minor hit in the early nineties, "Feel the Pain." There was an MTV video for it. The guitarist and singer's name is J. Mascis. He described their sound as "ear bleeding country." The bassist went on to front Sebadoh another important and influential band.
Yes they have a new album out. You can listen to the entire thing on Myspace at the moment, for free. I would reccomend their earlier stuff first. Songs to look for: a HUGE cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven (try to find the live version), Freak Scene, Severed Lips, Feel the Pain, anything off of the Bug album.
Calling them "grunge" doesn't really do them justice, especially if you think grunge means bands like Bush, or Stone Temple Pilots. They were a rock band.

Check out iTunes and know what songs to listen for. They are really a great band, just not like anything else. Check out these tunes, "The Wagon", "Freak Scene", etc.
They always were very do-it-yourself, so the production quality wasn't there, but I liked them more because of it. J. Mascis is the lead guy (vocals and guitar). He is insanely different on the guitar and you would never believe he actually plays everything you're hearing from the guitar at one time by himself.
Worth checking into. Maybe for you or not. Definitely artsy and an acquired taste.

Yeah, I saw that they're touring again and Lou Barlow is back in the band. If you're into fuzzy, guitar driven rock, you should give Dinosaur Jr. a try. J. Mascis is a god to almost every guitar nerd I know!

They are from about 20 years ago. They have been on a few TV shows to perform and promote the new album. Personally, I'm not a fan, because they are not very musical, but I love the name. I'm not a huge grunge fan and you'd think that a musician would grow out of this phase after 15-20 years.
