my comp hangs up witin one hour of plating football manager but on other applications it usually hangs up after a while

One other thought is the problem might be "heat based". How long has it been since you cleaned up the fans and heatsinks in you pc? Might be some overheating issues.
One of the two issues above will likely fix the problem.

Many people will advise virus eradication. That's a good idea. But, because your glitches depend on how hard the machine is working, it might be overheating.
My computer, a 3 year old Athlon XP 2000+ running Windows XP Pro, began to misbehave when the fans and heat sinks got dirty and gummy. The problem was overheating. I fixed it by cleaning and upgrading the cooling capacity.
