I think it's incredible what surgery and medical treatment can do these days. I hope the people that go through this transformation feel happier with their lives, there's nothing worse than feeling the life you are living is not really who you are.

It depends a bit where they're from in Britain (as it would in any country). I suspect, for example, that transsexuals would find it easier to live in London than a small village on a Scottish island.
But overall, and allowing for a few quite old fashioned people, I think British people are actually relatively tolerant, just often ill-informed.

Most people, British or otherwise, don't think about transsexual people a lot.
Most people, when they meet, talk with, or otherwise interact with transpeople, treat us the same as they would anyone else; as a person first.
Of course, there are always a few who want to hate us; but there are people who will hate anyone.
PS; for *fionaheels*; it looks and feels exactly the same...unless you're a gynaecologist, in which case, you'll notice a few subtle differences ;)

Hello there!
I dont think you can say the British people have a general oppinion on transexuals as with everything else you will find thousands of different oppinions on anyone given topic. Most of the people i have spoken about this issue with my family and such generally feel these people are very courageous and winners at life really coming through what they have to find their happiness. I myself have alot of respect and admiration for those people who have been so ultimately challanged in everyway by nature and life and have had the bravery to seek out their truth. Sorry for rambling :) just my opinion.

I approach them in the same way I approach homosexuals, heterosexuals and so on. I don't care what anyone does, as long as it is legal and nobody is getting harmed. Happiness is a hard thing to find, and if you can find it on your own terms, good for you.
However, if people make a big deal of it, whether it be a bloke going on endlessly about the women he is shagging, the gay mincing around like a true queen or the ropey transvestite making lewd suggestions. I will be offended and disgusted, not at what you are but at how you act.
The people who make choices and live quietly and with consideration to others indifference to those choices are the ones I respect and have time for. Those that have to make a big deal out of it and act in a way to deliberately offend and make people uncomfortable - usually for attention - are at best tiresome and at worst an utter joke.

Think you meen what do people think. I am male to female and seem to be readily accepted by my neighbours my friends. when I go shopping etc.. Workers coming into the home. I visit my neighbours and they visit me. I dont really see any problem with it. They allow me to talk and play with the children and we just help each other with things. I have 19 grandchildren and they come in and say nannie Pauline can we have a lollie or something else, they hug me and kiss me on the cheek. I dont really understand what you are asking. I am a normal person.

Unfortunately anyone who is slightly different to the norm get ridiculed by people who are stuck in the last century! Me personally, I have no problem with transsexuals, its their life and they are just trying to be happy. I have a couple of gay / lesbian friends and a male friend who is straight but cross dresses. I do not see anything wrong with any of this. They are not hurting anybody and should be allowed to do their own thing, it is a free world after all!

The question should not be what we think of transexuals but what they think of themselves. If they are happy with themselves that's the most important thing. Personally speaking I find them very fascinating and captivating. Generally I think the British people are very acceptable of all persuasions. Like all nations it only takes a small minority to spoil the nations image but good luck to all people whatever their goal in life.

British popular culture has been littered with cross dressers and they have been affectionately embraced over the years, Dame Edna et all. One can only hope that the same affection be placed for transsexuals and that society accepts there is indeed a third gender.

I personally couldnt give a monkies and its not relevant to me... I have many friends from this walk of life and they are all fantastic... one thing I have always wanted to know but never had the 'balls' (excuse the pun) to ask is whether a 'man-made' front-bottom (as my daughter calls it!) looks and feels the same as a 'born with' one?
