Apes and monkeys are both subsets of primates. Strictly speaking, an ape is a primate without a tail. Humans are a species of ape.

However, "monkey" isn't itself a scientific classification, as there are significant differences between Old World monkeys (those found in Europe, Asia and Africa) and New World monkeys (those found in the Americas). Old World monkeys are more closely related to apes than they are to New World monkeys.

Apes don't have tails, monkeys mostly do. Apes can swing from trees, monkeys can't. Apes are believed to have more mental capacity as shown by their ability to speak through sign language and even create words and they also use tools. Monkey intelligence, although quite high, seems to pale in comparison to ape intelligence.
