Well, how big of a network are you talking about? How many client computers? What operating systems do you want to use? What type of internet connection will you be using? Do you need wireless access, if yes for how large of a location? Do you need VPN access to the network for people at home? Email? Inner office Instant messaging? Are you running a web server for your web site? Do you need shared file storage, if yes how much? How many printers do you need and are they all needed to be accessed over the network?

And why is your manager asking you to do this since it does not seem to be in your skill set?

If you will be less that 50 computers check out Microsoft Small Business server. It is inexpensive, has server, email, database and internet all on one machine and is easy to set up. You will need a switch at the minimum and probably a router of some sort if you want to share an internet connection.

I would say you need to get some assistance from a network pro. Done incorrectly and office network can be easily hacked and cause all sorts of problems for all users and the business. (A few dollars for a consultant can save hundreds or hours on the back side.)

you desire a swap. A swap delivers a connection to each device with out rebroadcasting all packets to all segments of your community like a hub does. As for increasing your on the spot applications, you desire a on the spot get right of entry to element. no longer yet another on the spot router. Routers furnish a firewall and different beneficial factors which will only get on your way on your LAN, because you have already got a router conserving it from the internet.
