Jamaica Plain is a wonderful, multicultural neighborhood filled with great people, restaurants and shops. As with anyplace in today's world, you can google it and find that crimes are committed there. If you are looking for housing, here are some great tips I found on a Harvard University web page:
Helpful Hints
* Good apartments go quickly. Be prepared to think and act fast.
* Most leases require you to take an apartment within approximately one month of the time you sign.
* Make sure to actually view the apartment; the amount of rent does not always indicate the quality of the apartment.
* You will gain a better sense of the surrounding environment if you view an apartment during both day and night.
* Be sure to allot extra money for utilities, parking, telephone, laundry, and other expenses not included in the rent.
* Begin your search early to allow yourself enough time to make a decision.
* Find out about parking availability in the area (on-street, off-street, permit-only).
* Allow extra time for your search if you have pets; rentals that accept pets are often harder to find.
* The website www.neighborhoodlaw.org contains information on Massachusetts laws regarding housing. Before you sign a lease, it is a good idea to have an idea of basic housing and rental laws in Massachusetts.

JP is one of my favorite areas in Boston. Great shops, restaurants. It is one area where diversity works beautifully, and is a model for other locations to follow. There are areas that are still a little rough around the edges, but overall it's a safe place to be. A good realtor can steer you towards the more desirable locations.

One of the Best areas in Boston in my opinion. Very interesting, beautiful and culturally colorful. Lots of old homes from a variety of periods . Near beautiful Franklin Park and it;s Zoo. Many shops, multicultural eateries.
As in any neighborhood, there is common sense rules about being in isolated areas at night.
How do I know: Born and bred there.
